St Oswald’s Play Space

A lease was agreed with the diocese to use part of the agricultural field adjacent to the school as compensatory outdoor play place since the majority of their outdoor space has been taken by a new classroom block.

There were concerns raised by the Local Planning Authority with regards to the loss of the sense of openness. In response a concept was developed which suggested that the parcel of land was an orchard.

A grid of fruit trees was established around which a series of terraces and gentle ramps were formed creating numerous activity and sensory play spaces with varying surfaces. Fruit picking will become part of the children school life thereby encouraging interaction with nature.
