Extension to Former Barn

The owners of this compact converted barn were in need of additional space to accommodate their growing family, and they were desperate to stay in the house which is located in a pretty hamlet.

Through discussions with the Local Planning Authority who were keen to retain the linear form of the former agricultural building we proposed a contrasting, split-level, extrusion of a matching form. A flat-roof linking element helps to clearly delineate between the original and new fabric.

Pigmented zinc was chosen as the cladding for both walls and roof - this provides an agricultural reference whilst giving the extension a recessive appearance so as not to compete too heavily with the host building.
